Mystery Pictures 090911

These pictures are substantially less mysterious than previous ones. I know when the pictures were taken (about seven years apart), where they were taken (in almost the exact same location), and who is in them (two different aunts, with friends).

What I do not know is who the horses are. It seems that horses were an important part of my aunts' youth. What were there names? Where did they come from? What happened to them? What were their personalities? Stories about these details would not only bring these pictures to life, but would also provide some context for the pictures and may even spur (Ha!) memories of other events.

TIP: For every picture that records a moment in time, there is a story waiting to be told.

UPDATE

Dave writes that he thinks the second picture is Susan on Oscar, and Susan says that he's right!

"Horses...aw yes! The brown horse is Tony. He was a real gentle guy. I can't remember when we got him or whatever happened to him. The black horse is Oscar (good job Dave) he was Ellen's 16th b-day present. He was part quarter horse and the fastest horse in the riverbottoms. He had two things he did well. Dead Run and Dead Stop... (trotting and galloping were not part of his vocabulary) He was so very smart... I absolutely lovvvved him."

Anonymous -- who I'm guessing is Ellen -- provides the story for the first picture.

"The top picture is of a birthday party I had. It was probably taken about 1965. The girls are from front to back: Peggy Haws, Sandra Egbert, Ellen and Kathy Malone. Peggy and Sandra were in the ward. Kathy was a friend from school. We were riding in Grandpa's back yard. Check out our cool 'peddle-pusher' pants. And notice that we are riding bareback. We couldn't all fit on one saddle."

  1. Oh yes, the aunts definitely know the names of the horses. If they ever get a look at these, they will be all over that. I think the one that Susan is riding was called Oscar...
